Holy Shit, Live Aid Was 35 Years Ago
Most young hoppers only know about Live Aid because of the sanitized and mediocre Freddie Mercury biopic BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY (Rami Malek was great but let's not pretend the movie was). Though the movie showed how Freddie had a giant crowd in the palm of his hand as he stole the show, it didn't convey just how big of a deal the intercontinental charity concert was 35 years ago today. With superstar-laden concerts in both London and Philly on the same day, Live Aid was the biggest music event of its kind and had a line-up that made the 1980's Edmonton Oilers jealous.
I was 13 when it aired and while I remember catching some of the performances, I didn't plan my day around it or anything given that it was summer and I was a kid. But I made sure not to miss the woman who launched a million boners in the 1980s, Madonna.
While it wasn't a great performance day for all, 3/4ths of The Who put on this scintillating version of "Won't Get Fooled Again"...
EJ crushed "Rocket Man" (duh)...
TPATH were, as always, excellent...
Four Irish lads on the cusp of superstardom also had a great day...
Of course, the Kings from Queens showed how it's done...
And here's a shitload more if you want to check them out.
I'm not sure we'll ever see anything on this scale again. Take us home, David.
