The reigning champs find themselves in a new scenario being down 2-0 and heading back home, but everyone knows the series has not started until you lose a home game. That is the message reverberating through the Lightning locker room this am. Have the Rangers absolutely outplayed the Lightning in all facets? Yes. Has Vasy been a disappointment due to his crazy standards? Yes. Has Avery been on tv too much? Absolutely Yes! But again you have to win at home.
The Lightning seem to be unprepared for the speed in which the Rangers play with. The D have looked slow on breaks and very slow on closing the distance to the Rangers forward. A veteran team who have won back to back cups deserve the respect that they can figure this out. I am not so sure. Again, no one knows until after the season the injuries guys are playing with but a few D-men look to be hobbling.
The Rangers on the other hand have embraced the Gallant style of play that we all saw in the first season with Vegas when he led them to a cup final. This relentless pace that always keeps teams on their heels. No D to D passes get the puck right up to the forwards or skate it yourself. Do everything you can to limit the D-zone time and put pressure on the opposing D to take chances where you can pounce. It also helps to have a world class goalie playing at a high level. This is similar to Vegas when Fleury was standing on his head. The Kids line has been awesome and Kreider / Mika have been a threat every time on the ice.
I believe this game gets back to what we all believed this series would look like: a low scoring game that comes down to a shot. Yes I know the last game was low scoring but I mean really low. 1-0 or 1-1 OT.
