The Rangers Once Forgot To Tell Dale Weise That He Was Getting Cut
Most NHL fans don't think of Dale Weise as a New York Ranger because he was only there for 10 games at the start of his NHL career. But despite having to facilitate being cut by the team that drafted him, Weise would go on to play over 500 NHL games for some legendary franchises.
"The Dutch Gretzky" is one of the funnier guest nicknames we've come across on Spittin' Chiclets. During the '12-'13 lockout, Dale Weise ended up playing in the Netherlands because he told his agent that he'd play wherever the first call was from. Well, the Tilburg Trappers came calling and Weise was off for Holland ("the wool capital of the Netherlands" is wholly appropriate for a hockey player as well). 22-26--48 in 19 games later, the "Dutch Gretzky" was born.
UMass Head Coach Greg Carvel was nice enough to join us as well a couple of days after winning the NCAA National Champioship. You can get a real sense of why guys play for him when he speaks.
